About

sonorCities is a research team that studies the cultural and sensory experience of urban space. Our focus is both on the historical past and the ethnographic present, with an emphasis on periods of social and cultural transition. We primarily draw our case studies from the Ottoman/post-Ottoman and Eastern Mediterranean world in the transition to modernity, yet always maintaining a strong comparative perspective. We are interested in the interplay between method and knowledge, and the enabling role of digital humanities therein. We have a strong commitment to reflexivity, critical pedagogy, and the public role of scholarly engagement.
